![]() ![]() If you listen to the piece you could sing many of the melodies and feel as that was the main melody, This is what separates polyphonic from homophonic because with a homophonic piece you can clearly identify the main melody but with this piece you can’t really say one melody is more dominant then the rest of them. This piece’s texture is polyphonic because of its many instruments playing all different parts and all playing at different times. The three pieces are Die kunst der fuge By j.s.bach, Letter from home by Pat Metheny and donna lee by Jaco Pastorius. In this section I will talk about three songs and the textures and how counterpoint contributes to the texture. An example of polyphonic would be in Die kunst der fuge by Bach, A piece that contains several instruments playing separate melodies that are all equal in importance. this is a complex texture as it can sound messy and is commonly used in classical music. Polyphonic: This is a texture where you have two or more melodies that are of equal importance to the piece. Heterophonic is not used that often because its similar too monophonic but sounds a bit messy for the western ears. Heterophony is when you have more then one instrument playing one melody but instead of being monophonic, each instrument will play the line slightly differently with different uses of ornamentation(ways to play a note). Heterophonic:This texture is rarely used in western music. For example a folk singer playing with a guitar or a indian piece that has a drone. Homophonic: This is when you have one melody that is accompanied by a supported instrument like a Piano or acoustic playing chords or a simple melody that outlines the harmony of the piece. examples of this would be a “happy birthday” or a piece of music that is wrote for a solo flute. Mono means one in latin and phony means sound so its a texture thats just one melody. Monophonic: This is when you have one melody on its on and is not accompanied by any other pitched instrument. I won’t be focusing on Heterophonic as it is not used that often in western music. There are four main textures in music Monophonic, Homophonic, Heterophonic and Polyphonic. I will also talk about three songs and there different textures. In this blog I will be talking about the different textures in music.
